Korea drinking culture

1. Friends fill your glass.

Koreans usually don't pour drinks for oneself.
It's because Korean think it's an etiquette that I should fill the glass of people drinking with me.
Older people respect this etiquette more strictly,
and many young people follow this tradition as well.
There is also a superstition that if someone fill a glass for oneself,
the person in front of him will be unlucky for the next 3 years.
(Of course no one believes~)

2. Koreans cheer every time they drink

Koreans cheer every time they drink.
(Sometimes it's a little annoying.)
In the past people said 'Gun-bea" (meaning cheers),
today young people say "jjan~"
"jjan" is the sound that you can hear when the glasses hit each other.

<How Korean 'jjan' sounds like>

3. You can drink until dawn all year round

Korea bars don't close at night.
They are usually open until 2 A.M,
but the bars in downtown are open until 8 A.M.
If you visit downtown on weekends, you can see many people drinking at night.

4. 1st round, 2nd round, 3rd round for drinking

There are drinking rounds like Boxing rounds.
If you move to another bar after drinking at the first bar you started drinking,
it's called 2nd round (2차).
If you move for drinking again, it's called 3rd round (3차).
Koreans usually have more than 2 rounds.

5. Drinking games

Some 20's young people play drinking game.
There are dozens of different drinking games,
and if you lose the game, you drink.
You should make a very strong mixed drink to make the game more exiting.
There are various games from very difficult games to simple games,
and you can also play sexual games.

6. Drinking dinner after working

In Korea, almost every company has drinking dinner tradition.
It's for cheering employees, but employees hate this tradition.
It's because Korean companies have very strict hierarchy system,
so employees should obey their seniors.
This means that if I don't want to join drinking dinner after hard working,
I can't go home and get rest.
So drinking dinner could be painful for new employed workers.

7. You don't need to pay tips in Korea

There is no tip tradition in Korea.
So you just pay for what you have ordered.
No extra charge.

8. Club

There is no big difference between western clubs and Korean clubs.
It's filled with crazy people with passion.
For foreigners, I recommend to visit clubs in Hongik University and Iteawon, Seoul.
People tend to drink less at the clubs.
But the bars around clubs are crowded with people drinking a lot.
It's because drinks at the clubs are much more expensive than normal bars.

9. When it rains, Macgeolli (막걸리)!!

When it rains, Koreans drink Macgeolli.
You can drink it almost every bars,
but Koreans usually drink it at the restaurant selling 'Jeon(전)', Korean pizza.
It's a very old tradition, but young Koreans also love this tradition.
This could be very exotic experience for foreigners.

10. Hangover drinks

You can find many hangover drinks at the convenience stores
because Korean people drink a lot and undergo a hangover.
It relieves your hangover if you drink it before or after drinking.
They are about 5000 won.
(Personally, I recommend 'DAWN 808')
